Mount Beauty is a small town at the end of the Kiewa Valley in Northern Victoria.
The Regulating Pondage takes all the water flowing down from the hydro-electric power plants in the mountains above the town. The water flows in, regains its composure then, is let out again.
Although the height of the water can vary greatly the edge of the Pondage is a haven for wildlife: cormorants, ibis, plovers, black ducks, wood ducks, coots, wrens, finches.
On this day the Pondage was almost completely drained, a layer of water in the middle of the lake surrounded by exposed pond floor.
This painting was taken from a drawing done in situ, it's an experiment in layering four colours: Hansa yellow light, cobalt blue, red oxide, and titanium white.
